The late Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts) refused US$7,000 to do a show in St Lucia because he found the promoter had too many unknown calypsonians on the cast. “Kitchener used to choose his shows carefully.”

This is just one of the stories related to an audience by calypsonian Chalkdust (Dr Hollis Liverpool) at the VIP Lounge at the Queen’s Park Savannah last Tuesday.

The occasion was “The Life of Sparrow and Kitchener Offstage” through the eyes of Chalkdust in his lecture series. This was his contribution to Calypso History Month.

And if Kitchener was alive today he would “quarrel” about putting Sparrow’s name before his in the above title. That is the level of rivalry which existed between the two calypso greats. Chalkdust took pleasure in talking about these two men, giving a first-hand account of their many encounters as they travelled the world singing calypso.
